Character Mentor sketches

So I decided to start using the Character Mentor book again since I haven't used it in a while. I really like the variety of poses that I have been varietizing here.

I was going to draw DW with him, as drawn in James Silvani's 14th cover, but I had no room. So I drew him punching his invisble friend. ;)

This coming tuesday, Tom Bancroft (Disney animator and freelance artist) will be hosting another Animation webinar at 8 PM sharp.

This week's assignment was optional-- but I felt daring and decided to mess around with it.

 Character Mentor dumping

 So yeah-- here I am experimenting with head drawings from my Character Mentor book. I'm really glad that my heads are starting to show more dimension in their shape. And my expressions are really strong too. :)

And who said that my facials weren't the least bit impressive? I have to admit that my nose needs a lot of work, in the bottom pic, but I think I can manage if I keep at it. :)

The following drawings were taken from my Character Mentor book that I've gotten for Christmas, as previously announced. It feels good to get back into the Disney style again, but with more professional touches to the drawings. ;)

Christmas Gift!!! :D

 My mom got me this book from Barnes and Noble for Christmas while we were shopping for my family. I'm really glad I got my hands on this book-- it's going to help me a lot with camera angles, character designs, and other perspectives on animation.

Back to school!

Hey folks. I just returned to Nyack college for another fall semester of fun and education, and I just uploaded the next assignment for the latest character mentor webinar I will be partaking on thursday. Behold the latest and greatest character for this assignment...Trusty.

Mr. Bancroft wanted us to interpret a character idea for a fictional company that he's working for and wanted to see how we worked with it. 

Now that that's out of the way, I need to focus on reorganizing my room and get stuff prepared for this year.

But I will get back to you asap on my reflections.

new webinar!

Well folks. There's going to be another webinar this thursday, held by Mr. Bancroft again. As you know, I will be attending, and have one of my character assignments ready for the event. ;)

This character, TheoloJer is actually a little internet personality idea that I may pursue over the fall. Much like internet reviewers such as the Nostalgia Critic, Linkara, Spoony, etc. This character reviews movies that fall under the banner of religion-- both good and bad (but mostly bad ;) ).

A few months back, I created this video to promote the concept:

Copycat mood

There's that Duck again

Somewhere inside of me has been longing to draw Daffy Duck for some time, from my favorite LT cartoon by Bob Clampett, the Great Piggy Bank Robbery. I especially love that pose in the bottom center where Daffy's arms just stretch out-- it's very expressive. :)

If I haven't told you at this point, I had attended another character design workshop, led by Tom Bancroft, former Disney animator. This one had to offer some input on what we should keep in mind when we draw. One of the key thoughts that stuck with me was to listen to that inner voice, as you draw. Thinking about it, I think it certainly has applied to me for all the design work that I've done, whether it was set designing, comic strips, or just designing crappy decorations. Within me, I keep telling myself that certain aspects of my drawing, or strip could be better. Sometimes, it encourages me to draw it again so I can continue to learn from my mistakes.

I was going to post thoughts on it, as well as scan and post the notes I took, but the scan seems to take up much of the screen, and a lot on info I wrote down overlaps. If I find a wider scanner, or a better way to use the scanner I tried to use, I'll post them.

 Coraline sketchdump

Just a little practice so I may improve with how I draw Coraline. I'm happy with the first drawing I did of her, but I wanted to improve on how I draw her face; so I drew these expressions for practice.

The following two drawings are assignments for an upcoming Character design webinar that's being hosted by Tom Bancroft. These two drawings were done under 1.5 hours.

 Dr. Jameson

After reading Creature Tech, I have always been fascinated by that one scene Dr. Jameson wraps the Shroud of Turin around himself, like a blanket, quoting the lyrics to Blood Sweat and Tears' "Spinning Wheel." So I decided to recreate that magic. ;) While it's not 100% perfect, I am 100% proud of what I've done. I think it's a fantastic attempt to a fantastic moment in a fantastic book. I highly recommend it. ;)

While I was at my Grandma's house, I felt inspired to draw the art of Andrew Dickman, of Channel Awesome. Judging my skills to his, I really think we're both similar in terms of style and interests. ;)

ProLectron

 Just a little Superhero idea I sketched up for a Character Design workshop being held by Tom Bancroft. We were suppose to create a superhero based on the sketchy details he posted via email, and it was up to me to come up with something interesting. I really like this one because of the balance of weight and body volume I'm working with. :)
