Them Bones-- a short comic

This is a short 3 page comic that I am submitting to this year's issue of my college magazine, the Fine Print. It was a real challenge to get it in in such a huge crunch of time pressure. But I'm hoping the payoff will be worth it for this comic if it gets published. :)

Updated...

 Coraline sketchdump
Just a little practice so I may improve with how I draw Coraline. I'm happy with the first drawing I did of her, but I wanted to improve on how I draw her face; so I drew these expressions for practice.

The following two drawings are assignments for an upcoming Character design webinar that's being hosted by Tom Bancroft. These two drawings were done under 1.5 hours.

Max Motep...and a fly!

Only Max would be easily scared of something so innocent... :P

 trio sketch
I'm glad that I'm finally getting these guys in a group picture nowadays. I can't wait to see more.

Peace.

Handing it over...

 Hand practice

All these hands were strictly real-life reference for the sake of learning. I feel that there were some things that could've been better, but I think the practice was worthwhile either way. :)

Amelia Enmity update
This is a new sketch of Amelia Enmity. I got tired of the Converse shoes, hidden ears, and the same eyes, so I revamped it a little while still meeting my expectations. I had intended on working on a comic with her this summer, but I've been busy putting together my Alien Nation promo (which is almost done). I should be able to get started on that asap.

Cheers!

dumping it all out...

Just another sketchdump that I conducted. Not too happy with every character sketched, but I still think it's not all bad. I think it's really helping me figure out my strengths and weaknesses as an artist-- in terms of style.

nothing new...

Except this...
Yeah, I haven't been updating my blog lately. Still, I thought it should be important to at least show you that I'm still drawing. I've drawn quite a bit this week, but not enough as usual on account of the play. Anyway, this is a design for my home page that I started debugging for my Final project. More details on that later.

As you can see, most of my characters make an appearance while I think them up. On the far right is a new dude that I've had in my mind for about 2 years. More details on him to come.

Right now, I'm too tired. I need to get some sleep. Good night folks.

getting busier and busier by the minute...O_O

Pillar frame designs
Progress on the play has been pushing forward successfully-- everybody is doing a good job and I've so far helped build our first column, along with another set piece.

These designs here are just a sample of what is going to appear on the pillars in the final stages.

 unknown portrait sketch
This sketch here is an idea for a portrait that we may end up drawing painting in one of the indoor rooms/scenes of the play, like the Merchant's house, Venturewell's house, etc.

I love how the shadows contrast with the lit part of the face.

 Amelia Enmity sketch
Of course, missed drawing Amelia, so I decided to draw this little sketch that I may put in my art portfolio. There are still some areas that are in need of improvement, but I think this is a good sketch.

 2-point linear perspective sketch
This first attempt at drawing 2-point linear perspective didn't go as good as I hoped. The shapes came out kinda disproportionate, the shading wasn't too good, and the lines felt too enforced. But...

I drew it again and the results got a little better. This time the lines aren't quite solid looking, and the shapes are more proportionate; although, the perspective on the two blocks may not be right. Here's hoping that I can keep on drawing.

Burnes Hogarth sketch
This is another face sketch that I drew from my Burnes Hogarth book-- I'm not really too proud of it, but a sketch is a sketch.

Well, that's it for now folks. I need to attend to some homework that i need to get done.

Good night.

Diving into spring break!

 pear drawings
This is a pair of pears that I drew based off my Art Professor's website. Nice to know that my shading is getting better, but I think I may redraw this.

shapes practice
Again, I decided to redraw the shapes sketch so I can work on the details of each shape, based off the photo.

Burnes Hogarth arm
Nothing much to say about this; this was just for practice.

Rejected Mad Love Cover
As seen in the Bruce Timm edition of Modern Masters, this was one of the rejected covers for Mad Love and other stories. I felt compelled to draw this so I can take what I learned from my art class and apply it to this cover. I like how I got a good angle on Harley's figure-- though some things still need a bit work.

Haha! Gotta love the Joker's reaction XD

Mr Freeze sketch
Again, this image was also taken from Modern Master's interview with Bruce Timm.

Just looking from a glance, this piece almost looks perfect; but if you look closely in the Helmet area, you can tell one problematic error. I'm posting it here just to keep record of how I did.

But again, I like how I'm applying what I've learned from my art class and putting it into good use. It shows I'm really getting there. :)

Amelia meets Dexter
Hah! Like most of you youngsters growing up, I excessively watched Dexter's Lab. It was one of my favorite cartoons of all time. Here, he's encountering one of my own characters, Amelia Enmity and it seems that some old habits never die. ;)

However, I think Amelia could be better. Something about her legs don't seem to work. It's like, they're there, but they're not properly drawn in her skirt area.

Ork, Glork N Spork storyboards

Now that I have spring break, I can finally resume my storyboard work for my Alien Nation promo I intend to put together. I think this time, the trio are really starting to pop out. I mean look at the shadowing on the characters, it seems like they're really coming alive.

That's all for now folks. Until next time, stay sharp. ;)

update before spring break!!

Sorry that I haven't had any time to really update this week. It's been extra busy considering that I have been preparing for a midterm or two this week. But I'm confident that I'm 99.9% done. In the meantime, here's some of the work I did.

Cross Contour practice
This is something I drew monday, the day before art class. It's nice to now that I'm getting better at drawing different angles of flags or fabrics when they're bent.

basic shapes practice
This is based off a photo that was found on my Professor's art site for students. It's certaintly helping me with basic shapes and value without relying on lines all the time.

rough sketch of Mosley North
This is just a rough sketch of the north side of my dorm on campus. It's not the most accurate sketch of the building, considering that I still need to work on perspective and other details, but it's good for a suggestion piece.

Burnes Hogarth portrait
I think I'm getting better at drawing this portraits bit by bit. Sure there's some details missing, but the overall shading and lines are proof that I'm arriving to what I want to do with my art. :D

Amelia Enmity voodoo redux sketch
And of course, I couldn't resist a little Amelia Enmity sketch. I missed drawing her so much, that I decided to redraw my old sketch of her practicing voodoo. XD

I can certainly tell that my value is starting to show in this sketch, and my perspective has improved.

Well, I'm getting tired. So I think I'm going to hit the sack soon. Good night everybody!

comic strip redux

 comic strip part deux

Me and a friend went over my comic strip that I drew Saturday night and he made a couple suggestions on how to fix the ending. I decided to reformat it a bit and take his advice. This is going to be the real next submission just in case the Forum editors don't accept the first one.

Amelia Enmity sketch
I missed drawing Amelia Enmity, so I drew her broomsurfing. I think I may do something like this for her in the future, in which she broom-surfs.

That's all for now folks. See you next time.

Big News and new art...

You guys might be wondering by now, what my super secret project that I have been mentioning lately this past month? Well, since I just had my first meeting with the people who are involved with that project, I figured now was the time to come out of the closet and reveal the news: I am involved in a college play, entitled 'The Knight of the Burning Pestle!' The same play that was based off a 16th Century written by Francis Beaumont.

Yes sir, folks! I am going to be set designing for a college play so I can put my talents to good use. Remember all those sketches of those forests, streets, rooms, and buildings? Well, those are all ideas for the play which will eventually end up on stage in the coming weeks.

I'm hoping all that hard earn work will pay off and that everybody involved in the production will do a great job. :)

But anyway, let me direct your attention to the art portion of the post as I share you some of my other recent accomplishments.

Burnes Hogarth practice
Just working on muscle variation with this piece I saw from BH's Anatomy book. I like how I'm getting better with form, posture, face details, etc. This is good practice especially if I want to get better.

Comic book shop ad
For the first time ever, I got to design my very first ad for a local comic book shop in downtown Nyack. As you know, the name of the shop is called 'Funny Business comics', distributer of comics, toys, and Legos. Aside from the contact numbers that I illustrated on the ad, you can also contact them at their local website here:
http://www.funnybusinessonline.com/

Amelia Enmity/Bobby Bender comic
Remember when I said that I wanted to developed my very own horror/dark comedy story? Well, I consider this little comic, a beta story. It's not really much, but I'm still glad I did it for laughs. The personality of the characters are so far spot on and the ink job is pretty decent. The only thing I'm not very pleased with was the end panel where Amelia says 'Shut up' first, followed by Bobby Bender's remark after that. You see, it's suppose to be the other way around. I think after I get some set designing work out of the way, I'm going probably redraw this so I can declare my best work 100%.

That's just about it for tonight folks. Hope to hear back soon. ;)

lunchtime!

Burnes Hogarth sketchdump
This time I think I'm starting to get the grip of drawing heads easier, as well as drawing them from different angles. I'm glad I'm getting better results.

Merchant's room
This is another drawing of a room apart of a secret project that I'm currently involved in. I think the alignment of the fireplace is nice because I managed to capture the the proportion and the geometric alignment perfectly. What needs to most work is the portrait, the chair and the rug.

Chris Peeper sketch
Wow! It's been ages since I drew Chris. I'm glad I can still draw him after learning so much while I was drawing for the paper. :)

Amelia Enmity's glory
Have I ever told you that Amelia Enmity rarely smiles? Well, this is probably one of the few times she smiles. ;)

While I think this imagery really captures her true nature, especially with the shadow, I think the perspective could be way better. What it needs is to be tilted so it looks more like it's standing right behind her, rather than the shadow looking at us.

That's all for now. Enjoy! :)

One more time now!

Bad Weather take 3

Once again, I decided to redraw this one more time at the request from one of my friends from the Forum at my college. She wanted me to take out the wordy dialogue on the left because she felt that I didn't need to explain the scenario-- rather, just let the scenery speak for itself. I see why because if I explained why the scenario looks like this, even if it's visually obvious, it doesn't let the gag naturally show what is happening.

I think I'm starting to get better at my skills now that I'm practicing with the same scene now. Still, her body could've been a little better. Again, I'm gonna need to work with with Amelia Enmity some more in the future.

All in all, good job. :)

Ah, the Joys of the College Paper!

Hey again you beautiful people!

Just letting you know that I'm still drawing and still managing to keep busy all the while trying to get my submissions for the college paper sent on time. I'm also writing two articles for the paper-- an exclusive interview with Tad Stones [creator of Darkwing Duck/Disney Veteran] and a review of It's a Wonderful Life, that I need to get done by Tuesday.

Anyway, here's some submissions for the paper:

Amelia Enmity in the weather take 2
I decided to resketch this at the request of one of the writer's from the Forum-- she wanted me to fix up the punchline a little and I agreed so forth. That's the beauty of drawing your own work, you get to learn from your mistakes and work them out. I also got to experiment with a different colored shirt for her. I think she looks great. :) And you're probably wondering why her umbrella stick is purposely inverted like that...well, i decided to keep it that way for an undecided reason (I guess it's part of her magic she practices or something lol)

College kid's Coffee Consumption
A lot of the guys at the Forum wanted to cover on the constant coffee consumption that's going around the campus. So I decided to draw this quick comic strip for them. And I had the pleasure of adding a few depictions of a friend from college. ;) Of course, I may color this one after I submit the black and white one.

Garfield sketches
Seeing that I grew up reading the Garfield comic strips as a kid, I thought I'd experiment with the characters to hone my style. I especially love how the signature eyes influenced some of the characters I've created. Jim Davis is probably one of my biggest influences in cartooning. :)

That's all for now--I hope to update some more art soon. :)

Weird Weather post!

*prepares singing voice*

On the first day of Christmas, my True Love gave to me...a weather gag with Amelia Enmity.

Just a little surprise for the next cartoon gag that I'm submitting to the forum. I wish I had changed the shadowing on the snow, but all in all, not bad.

This is to tackle the issue of the weird weather that the college has been experiencing lately-- such as snow in October, Heavy Rain weeks later, sunny days right before winter, etc. Pretty weird, huh?

Taking care of business

Hey guys! Just letting you know that I am still drawing in the midst of Finals that are coming up. So I need to start studying my buns off, which could possibly result in less drawing. That doesn't mean I won't be updating this blog as often as I have been doing now.

Darkwing Duck sketchdump

All apologies for the slant on this photo here-- I had a hard time trying to adjust it with my scanner; it was really annoying, but at least I got to put these up. Anyway, I copied these off of James Silvani's concept artwork gallery on the negaverse website where all the DW fans gather. I outta regather there so I can share my DW fandom sometime. :)

Spork studies
Mind you that these aren't in the perfect quality, drawing these were still loads of fun. I got to experiment with some new cartoon expressions that probably were never done before. XD

Amelia Enmity/Bobby Bender
And last, but certainly not least, the unveiling of Amelia Enmity's new design as well as a new character/friend of hers-- Bobby 'Bloody' Bender-- the obsessive compulsive vampire. Mind you that this isn't the final design of Bobby, but it certainly is work posting for the sake of history because there are a bunch of features here that I want to keep. :)

I especially enjoy AE's new look too because it looks more matured from before. :)

And the fact that they're hovering above the ground is epic!! XD

I actually drew it like that because I drew AE at a slanted angle, which I had an occasional problem of drawing my characters in that fashion. So, to correct my mistake, I decided to draw her hovering on a piece of earth to add to the effect.

new submissions

Garfield sketchdump

I thought I'd return to my Jim Davis roots and experiment with drawing Garfield characters, as referenced from my Garfield's Life to the Fullest funny book. The funny thing is despite the fact that Jim Davis was one of my early artistic inspirations, I can't seem to draw Garfield 100% spot on. lol But I manage to do a good job though. :)

Amelia Enmity hates homework

This is just a resketched take of what I had previously posted on my blog, as well as submitted to my college paper not too long ago. This is totally better than the first one, but I feel there's a few errors with the perspective and needs a bit more work. However, the perspective works better than what I done previously.

Bad Roommates Comic Strip

This is yet another submission for the college paper in which is corresponds with an article, written by another student, on bad roommates.

I had to color it in because I didn't feel write submitting a funny with no color to fill in for the pencil job. One of these days, I'm gonna get a Cintiq pad and color my pics/comics neater.
